  8.                            (o)(o)  Having  now run a bbs for a few weeks
  9.                           /     \  I have learnt to tolerate the dreaded
  10.                          /       | infection  that  has welded itself to
  11.                         /   \  * | the  Amiga comms scene ever since the
  12.           ________     /    /\__/  first modem was purchased, "Leechitus
  13.   _      /        \   /    /       Spongyious".    However   is  letting
  14.  / \    /  ____    \_/    /        sombody  leech  from  you  such a bad
  15. //\ \  /  /    \         /         thing  as  far  as  the scene goes, I
  16. V  \ \/  /      \       /          mean  did you not write that util for
  17.     \___/        \_____/           the  masses?,  Did you not write that
  18.                                    demo  for the masses?, Also where did
  19. you get this issue of the word from, Did you swop it for some really new
  20. title  or  did  you  download it from you local bbs that you have a 15-1
  21. ratio on?

  23. I  like leeches using my bbs, They must have some use for the stuff they
  24. download  else they would not bother?  They must upload stuff as well to
  25. get  there downloads, I suppose its how you view it, I must admit i like
  26. to  get  all  the new demos utils and stuff but they all come in time so
  27. whats the rush?

  29. Also  why  not  be  a little humane and give them unlimited downloads so
  30. they  can  help  themselves  to as much stuff as they like?  If it gives
  31. them pleasure why not is that not what its all about!!!!

  33. Well actually its not what its all about, while the leech is sucking the
  34. software  from  the  veins  of  your  bbs  there  are probably ten users
  35. starving from lack of intake, These same starving users are probably the
  36. ones  who  strive to upload a few bits of stuff that will be of interest
  37. to many more users.

  39. The  typical leech on my bbs logs in on a friday night at about midnight
  40. and  they  download  a  file  list  (thats  a free download) and log off
  41. straight  away,  They know that they are at there maximum download level
  42. and  need  to upload some files (the bbs software works on a file system
  43. not  a bytes uploaded system so if they upload an icon they can download
  44. a pile of files that could be 1mb).

  46. Well  while  the  leech  is logged off he looks through the global files
  47. list  and  writes down what he wants, He spots 10 1mb files he wants and
  48. promply  writes  down  the names of the archives on his note pad, Now he
  49. must find some stuff to upload,
  50.  
  51. Well  the  leech looks through his cd copy of the multimedia toolkit and
  52. finds  a  couple of 10k files and shoves them into ram, He calls the bbs
  53. and  logs in on his macro key, avoiding the mail area so as not to waste
  54. any  time,  then  he proceeds to upload his 20k of clipart giving him 10
  55. files in credit.  The guy goes straight to the download button and types
  56. in his files that he wants, mind you he could not be bothered to type in
  57. a description of his uploads.

  59. Next  thing  you  know the guy downloads about ten megs of pretty new or
  60. really  good  quality  stuff and then just drops his carrier causing the
  61. bbs to crash, What a twit.....
  62.  
  63. Well  I  wake  up  in the morning and the red lights of a guru have been
  64. flashing  all  night...   what  a  bastard i thing, so i look through my
  65. caller  logs  n  stuff  and its the same guy again.  after spending mant
  66. hours testing my bbs for bugs that may have caused it to crash I come to
  67. the  conclusion  that  maybe  its my pooter.  So I get some more ram and
  68. test out everything with a local user (more expense) no problems.

  70. Next  thing I decided to monitor my bbs for a few nights to see what the
  71. problem  was, I soon found out, So I had a word with the milkman (leech)
  72. and  he  never  called  again.   Funny  really  as I gave him a few more
  73. credits  and a bigger ratio to try to encourage him and to show him that
  74. we  are  not  all  that  bad and we only nuke folks when they are really
  75. really bad.

  77. Well  I  think that about sums it up really, Oh I would just like to say
  78. hello to a few leeches, Since I got shited on I now have a really strict
  79. policy  with regards uploading, fine if you want to log in and have your
  80. files  all  done and ready, its really the wise thing to, But dont think
  81. you  can get away with uploading a few shitty files on any of NFA's bbs,
  82. There are rules that must be obeyed and you will find them in this issue
  83. of THE WORD.
